this place is horrible!!!!!

One of the many rip-off restaurant in town. I cannot comprehend how so many people are so uneducated and clueless to give positive critiques to this restaurant.

First off, the place doesn't even have a kitchen. The ""so-called' chef an his assistant cook for hundreds of people with a tiny bbq and a Pizza-hut style over.

Second, the average platter is $25-30 for a microscopic portion of meat, for the most part soaked in cheese sauces. What the chef calls 'fusion Mexican cuisine' is indeed pedestrian, inexpensive blending of random ingredients.

Third, most of the people in the restaurant are dunk....being a BYOB, while waiting for the food (usually 45 min to get a plate), people get drunk and then...everything tastes better.

I'm sorry this place is a shame. Much worst that I could possible imagine. Finally, it is offensive that the place doesn't take credit cards (Mr. chef are you so cheap not to pay the 2% commission on credit cards) and .. it even says in the menu that there an $18 minimum charge for sitting down. Are we joking here? This place would close down in any civilised country on earth....it survives here because likely most enthusiastic clients that eat here on a Saturday night have had macaroni cheese all week along waiting for the big night!!!!

A suggestion to whoever is interested in trying this. Get yourself a big Mac. No matter how ugly it tastes is will be better!!! Mr chef...stop ripping people off and take a cooking class.....and hire a chef for your cuisine.

RUDE waitstaff!

Over rated! Went there with my boyfriend and we brought a nice selection of beers to drink with our dinner. The waiter looked offended when he asked if he could bring us another beer from our six pack! He down right insulted us. Like we were trashy for drinking beer. He sort of mocked my bf and said, ""what, you want another BEER"". Totally offended.
The food however was great. Ill never go again though. The waitstaff ruined the whole experience.

Reservations about their lack of reservations!!

We were given a $50 voucher by my boss and decided to go for my husband's birthday.

Having never been there before or knew where it was we decided to check it out before hand to see if we liked the menu, we got talking to a chap that works there who advised us we couldn't book it was a first come first serve deal.

We decided to go on the Saturday night, we had had a light lunch so we could chow down when we got there!

We arrived at 8.30pm and the place was packed to the rafters. We put our names down on the list and were told they would call us when a table is ready for us. We were also told our wait time would be 45 mins to an hour.

So we walked around thinking it would kill time but no matter where we went we saw people EATING! in restaurants windows, in the street, anywhere and everywhere. It was driving us insane! We became obsessed with clock watching we walked past Elvez salivating as we saw people sat at their tables eating yummy steak fajitas in large portions, we must have walked the same route what felt like a thousand times, we were exhausted!

After an hour and a half we decided to go back to Lolita’s and find out how much longer it was going to be, we stood waiting outside almost watching the people sat at their tables eating wishing it was us! My husband went in to try and ask someone how much longer we were going to have to wait when my phone rang and it was Lolita's telling us our table was ready. Wooohooo!

We got seated and it was freezing cold, I had to put my jacket on and looking around a few others had too. The door was open due to serving people outside.

It was VERY loud we couldn't really have a conversation plus it's a small room so you’re kind of on top of each other. It would have been cozy if it wasn't so cold!

Our waitress was average on the friendly scale but after seeing how busy it was she was probably frazzled and ready to go home!

We ordered the mixed chips with guacamole dip for apps which were above average.

For entrees I ordered the Puerco, Puerco which was a Pork chop with potatoes and spinach and my husband ordered the Vaca con budin de papas which was boneless shortrib with roasted Brussels and bacon and potatoes gratin.

My husband’s meal was mouthwatering, the shortrib was so tender and melted in the mouth and my Pork chop was a little tough but still good however, my potatoes were really tasty.

Would we go there again? for the food yeah probably but for the atmosphere and the waiting around? Nah!

I'm glad we didn't pay full price for waiting around, not being able to hear each other talk and me being so cold I looked like I was smuggling peanuts!!!

If they took reservations I'm sure the place would run a lot smoother and have a few less frustrated customers!

P.S For dessert we went to CapoGiro across the road for dessert and saw Pierre Robert which made my husbands night as he's a big fan! "" Great day in the mornin!""

We waited and waited....

We had a reservation one rainy Friday night. We came early, but ended up waiting 40 minutes! Apparently, reservations aren't really honored here, it's just a formality. We ended up heading over to El Vez and having drinks and appetizers, it was either that or stand in the rain!! I would have been more then happy to stay there. I must say when we were finally seated, the service was very nice and the food was exceptional, the braised short ribs were amazing! I don't know if the tequila saved the day, but after our rough start, the evening turned out to be quite nice.

Food is good, but expensive... and we saw a giant roach

The food is very good. I thought the margarita mixers (sans tequlia) were too expensive at $12/pitcher. One pitcher was not enough for a group of 3. Also, I know any restaurant in the city probably has roaches, but I don't like to see them crawling on the wall next to my table!

The food at Lolita is reasonably good. However, I will not be returning to this restaurant ever again because I have had terrible experiences with the service. On my most recent trip to the restaurant, we heard the host apologizing to people about the long wait, referring to our table as ""the problem"". He claimed we had been at the restaurant for many hours when it had actually been about 1.5 hours. When we confronted the host, he was incredibly nasty. Waiters are also usually unfriendly at this restaurant. Overall, TERRIBLE SERVICE, would not recommend Lolita. Try eating at El Vez across the street!

Our situation is similar to that of chatty83. We also made a reservation (with a very rude and impatient man over the phone) but ended up arriving ten minutes early. Well, it took everything in her, the owner, not to kick us out. ""What do you expect me to do?"" she barked, ""kick someone out?"". We weren't expecting ANY special treatment, we were just checking in and were more than happy to wait. But we didn't. We had dinner at AMADA, again, and thoroughly enjoyed the rest of our evening. We happen to know a few employees of this monster and she not only owns Lolita; she also owns Bindi, Open House, Verde, Grocery and the soon-to-be mediterranean eatery next door to Verde. Why do people support these two tyrants? They too will go the path of Neil Stein... By the way, i was forced to give a rating. If it were up to me, i would have given nothing.

We had a reservation here and we got stuck in traffic and had a hard time parking. We tried to call but the message said that they were not answering calls until later. We told this to the woman who told us that she gave our table away. We pleaded with her that it was my 20th wedding anniversary and could she please make an exception. She was rude and smug! She would not budge a bit. Even if she said it would be a little bit we would have waited. I WILL NEVER EAT HERE. Instead we walked down to CHIFA and had an INCREDIBLE meal!! She was such a b*tch. I understand her position but she didn't have to be so rude about it!

Would love to give it 5 stars..put gotta go with 1

I had dinner at Lolita Friday. The food was great, the service very good, however, I AM NEVER GOING BACK!! The noise level is painful. It must average a consistent 85 to 100 decibels (I think jet engines are about 80 decibels?). I would confidently wager a bet that that is what the decibel level was in the restaurant. We didn’t stay for dessert and left an hour after we had arrived (notice other couples doing the same). Our ears were literally ringing for minutes after we left. A shame, great food and great service I’ll miss it.

great food and margeritas

Went there for the first time on a double date.. food was GREAT, i had the enchiladas.. fresh guac was awesome too. tried the blackberry and basil margheritas which were also amazing. Only drawback was that we sat outside which was nice but the table was on a HUGE slant.

Good food, stupid rules.

I went to Lolita for the first time last night with a group of women from work. We got there early (5:00) and were the ONLY people in the place. We were still waiting for 1 of the 5 of us and we were told that we could not be seated until the whole party was there. I understand rules like that when it is busy and crowded. But, NO ONE was in the restaurant. It seemed goofy and the snobbish attitude turned me off from the start.

Luckily, unlike the manager, the waiter was nice and the chefs have the skills to back up the pricing. I'll be back, I just hope the manager has the night off that day.

(most) Everything Was Right

I went to Lolita for the first time after hearing a friend rave about the margaritas. We went on a Friday evening and were able to sit outside. Since it is a BYO, we got a pitcher of margaritas and were able to add our own tequila. Yum. The free chips and salsa were good though both salsas were a bit too spicy for my liking. I had the mahi mahi, which was excellent. The portion size was perfect and the flavors of the dish were so good.

As with many small restaurants, the tables inside and out were almost on top of each other. If you're easily distracted, its going to be hard to carry on a conversation since, at times, you can hear the people at other tables better than the person across from you. Also, the wait staff was so fast, almost to a fault. I felt like I might get run down on my way to the bathroom. They also shooed away people who were lingering at their table once they were done since the wait was an hour. That's good for the people waiting but unfortunate for those who want to enjoy the last few sips of their drinks.

Overall, a great experience. I will definitely go back.

Good, Not Great

Food was 3-4 stars, but everything else detracted from the experience. We were there early (5:30) yet it still was crowed and noisy. People kept coming in and standing in the doorway, leaving the door wide open. We were freezing!

For us there was simply too much going on to actually enjoy our food at Lolita. We will not go back.

Great Place

In contrast to some of the negative reviews, I think the place is great. Had dinner there last night, great margaritas and great food. What else do you look for in a mexican restaurant. As for the $18 per person minimum, you mean the restaurant actually needs to make money!!? What absurd arrogant concept! Lighten up and enjoy people!

ha ha ha..Who is writing these reviews? Seriously?

It's funny to me reading these reviews. I live in the neighborhood and stop in here occasionally after work for a nice dinner. It's easy to get a table during the week and the people that work there seem really down to earth. (To me. But then, I am a reasonable, normal person.) I will ask you, people of city search, would you come to a restaurant and 1.) already have eaten dinner. 2.) don't want to spend more than $18 (dinner in center city mind you) 3.) IF you don't want to wait during the weekend with all the other jersey jocko trash then don't go out to eat on saturday night! Some of these reviews make me really angry, and make me realize why tiny BYOBs have such policies in the first place. Because everyone wants to go there and drink for free and eat for free too. Why don't all you who already ate dinner stay HOME and leave a table open for me. Thanks.

Food is excellent, worth the hour wait, but the service and snobbery I could do without.

I went for Dinner on a Saturday night and there was an hour wait so we went across the street to El Vez for a drink and some guacamole.

We had excellent food. Calamari (not fried) to start and both our entrees were delish! Our waiter, however, barely spoke to us and clearly was not listening to a thing we said. We asked to have our plates wrapped up because we had a significant amount of food left over and he either wasn't listening or forgot! When we asked about our doggie bags when the dessert arrived he dissapeared. To compensate for the food he through out he brought a tiny piece of meat in a to-go-box. It was probably about 1/8 of the amount of food we had left! Needless to say, our waiter ruined our otherwise excellent dinner. If he had given his name or even introduced himself i would call Lolita and let them know.

Went here with a group of 6 for dinner during the week. I've been here before and had great experiences. However, this evening my opinion of this place totally changed! our server was rude and snobby-are you kidding me lady-this is a byob in philadelphia-get a grip! anyway, one of us was not eating dinner but we were told there was an $18 minimum for everyone at the table-I have never heard of such a thing. But, our server was right, it states that on the menu. I think that is absurd! Her attitude and that rule make me never want to go back to this place. BTW-there were 3 tables of loud college students there that night as well-not the kind of crowd I was looking for. There are a ton of BYOB's with better service, food and atmosphere in Philly-Thanks but no thanks Lolita's!

Great food, not so friendly staff!!!

The food is always amazing but everytime I go there the wait staff has an attitude, I'd give them 5 stars if they were friendlier.

bitchy and lame without the goods to back it up

This restaurant reminds me of the girl in high school that was beautiful and popular and super bitchy....except at the five year reunion when she's chunky, unsuccessful AND still super bitchy! I read so many good reviews- I should have checked and saw they were all written five years ago. It looks like they've been through a chef or two and now the enchilada tastes like sneakers ( don't listen to the servers, they are awful- and how do you mess up an enchilda!?). I went back again thinking every restaurant has it's bad nights- AND IT WAS WORSE! The fundido was just a giant blob of melted coagulating cheese- something I would make in college if I was really stoned and had a bunch of rotted cheese in the mini fridge. The carne assada (which the waiter swore up and down was fantastic) was mediocre and getting cold when it got to the table.
I can usually drink enough and have a good time despite the food, but what I can't accept is how bitchy the staff was. Both times we were ""greeted"" by an obnoxious dark haired man who apparantly thinks he's working at the Palm restaurant or something. Even our simplest questions ( can we order an appetizer to start? How does it work with the margeritas? How many does the guacamole serve?) were answered briskly and borderline nasty by our waitress (the blond with the pixie cut has some deep attitude problem she'd like to work out in front of you, watch out!). Weird.
The juices for the margeritas are pretty good though.

Owner/Hostess knows almost nothing about customer service

My friends and I went to Lolita on a Saturday night for a friend's birthday. The wait was about an hour which is okay since we knew they didn't take reservations. However, when we gave them our cake to hold, the owner told us there is a $4 per person charge to eat our cake there. I told her that I called several days prior to ask if it would be ok to bring our own cake. I was told it would be alright and not informed about the $4 per person charge. Instead of being apologetic for being misinformed, the owner proceeded to passively accuse me of lying by stating that ""obviously we've been opened for 5 years and have always had this charge."" Her tone was accusatory and extremely rude. The food and the wait staff who served us were fantastic, but unfortunately, the owner was a poor representation of the restaurant!
